The newest addition to the Tebay and Gloucester Services fold, Cairn Lodge has settled seamlessly into the family. It too started life as a home-run business when founders John and Aileen MacInnes spotted an opportunity on the then-new M74 motorway in the early 1990s. They named it after the gothic gateway on site, which is all that remains of an abandoned attempt to rebuild Douglas Castle in the 1700s.

The Westmorland Family took over in 2015 and continued the good work with Donna Hodd, daughter of the founders, at the helm as operations manager. After a major renovation, it’s now dressed to impress in the Westmorland signature look. A brand new Farmshop stocks local gifts and artisan foods, while the coffee bar has handy charging points and a gargantuan ceiling planter overhead. The loos and showers are lovely, and the new Kitchen is a mellow place to fill up on a hot meal or quick cuppa. They’re also proud to have a Changing Places toilet, one of the first on the Scottish motorway network.
