Cairn Lodge began as a home-run business when John and Aileen MacInnes spotted a gap on the M74 in the 1990s. They named it after the gothic gateway on site - all that remains of an attempt to rebuild Douglas Castle in the 1700s.
It's now a first-rate Farmshop, Kitchen and rest stop, championing exceptional Scottish food, drink, craft and design. Its as-good-as-homemade cakes, savouries and colourful seasonal salads come from over 50 local producers. This is very good food made from scratch; there's no mass defrosting here. There are snacks and artisanal gifts galore, while the coffee bar has charging points to help humans and devices top up together.
The bathrooms are lovely and the Kitchen is a mellow place to fill up on a hot meal or quick cuppa. If the quality feels familiar, it's because this dressed-to-impress destination completes the Westmorland trio of next-level services (see Gloucester's and Tebay's farm shops, kitchens and services, too).
