The crêpes at Café au Chocolat are to die for – ‘as good as in Brittany’ one French visitor remarked. Lunch on the savoury varieties, made with buckwheat flour so naturally gluten free, perhaps stuffed with mushroom and spinach or hummus, rocket and sundried tomatoes. Follow up with a strawberry and salted caramel version if you’ve got a gap for something sweet.

You’ll find the sky-blue fronted café tucked up a side street in the pretty Georgian town of Stamford. Vintage furniture, a 17th-century cast iron range and scuffed panelling give a sense of tousled Parisienne chic inspired by owner Krystyna’s travels around Europe. That leaning also translates into deliciously straightforward food: rich, single origin coffee, freshly squeezed juices, french-style pâtisseries, not to mention its chocolate namesake, which is present in many forms. The raspberry and white chocolate brownies are noteworthy, as are the orange-scented hot chocolate and luxury French truffles.
