Visitors have been swarming to Doune Castle since it’s starring roles in Game of Thrones and ‘Monty Python. But even if its silver screen fame doesn’t lure you in it’s well worth visiting this impressive medieval stronghold, built for the Regent Albany, ‘Scotland’s uncrowned king’. You can take an audio tour narrated by Terry Jones himself as you explore the wooded grounds, towering battlements, vast banqueting hall and castle kitchens.
When you’ve had your historic fill, beeline for the Buttercup Café on the high street to fill up on hearty home cooking. The café is airy and warm with diner lights strung over cosy booths and there’s a sheltered courtyard out back.
The Buttercup pancake stack is a breakfast to remember; for lunch try the homemade cauliflower soup with sourdough bread, aubergine and potato curry, or salmon and prawn sandwiches. Don’t miss out on a slice of the fabulous cakes before you leave.
