Riverside walks, farm shop, terrific café, brewery, distillery, ospreys: Born in the Borders is a visitor centre that ticks a lot of pit-stop boxes. There’s a tranquillity to its sprawling fields and woodlands, and visitors are encouraged to connect with nature. Choose between the mini beast safari, grass boarding, a spirit-restoring wander along the banks of the River Teviot or the thrill of spotting resident ospreys Sampson and Freya in the skies.
The fields and farms around supply the kitchen with almost all the ingredients it needs for its excellent dishes, whether beef braised in home-brewed beer, hearty sandwiches, local ice cream or marmalade cake. The shop will supply everything you need for an equally delicious picnic – local charcuterie, cheese, bread, honey – and the fields nearby offer fabulous spots for enjoying it. You needn’t miss out if you’re passing in the evening either: the sister pub in nearby Ancrum is a convivial hub with the same approach to excellent food.
