M9

The magnificent 13th-century cathedral is reason alone for stopping in Dunblane, a picturesque town on the Allan Water river that's filled with charming architecture. It’s also home to Scotland’s oldest private library, which has some 4,500 books dating as far back as 1500, as well as Andy Murray’s famous golden postbox. Wander the pretty streets and riverside paths before refuelling at the comforting and quirky Another Tilly Tearoom – voted ‘Customer’s Most Wanted Café’ in Scotland – where sensational baking is the order of the day.

Red gingham cloths dress the tables, to which plates of scrambled eggs on toast, homemade panini, and bowls of lentil soup and soda bread are ferried. Cakes are a real highlight – try a slice of hummingbird cake, a fresh meringue or the millionaire’s shortbread, made to Andy Murray's granny’s recipe. The home-baked gluten- and dairy-free options are impressive. Freshly cooked breakfasts are served all day. Tea is served in vintage china cups from pots warmed by handcrafted cosies, and the Belgian hot chocolate will transform a cold rainy day. Picnic boxes can be pre-ordered for collection.
