The magnificent 13th-century cathedral is reason alone for stopping in Dunblane, a picturesque town on the Allan Water river filled with charming architecture. But it’s also home to Scotland’s oldest private library, which has some 4,500 books dating as far back as 1500, as well as Andy Murray’s famous golden postbox.
Wander the pretty streets before refuelling at the comforting Another Tilly Tearoom – recently voted ‘Customer’s Most Wanted Café’ in Scotland – where sensational homebaking is the order of the day. Red gingham cloths dress the tables, to which plates of scrambled eggs on toast, homemade panini, and bowls of lentil soup and soda bread are ferried. Cakes are a real highlight – try a slice of hummingbird cake, a fresh meringue or gluten-free millionaire’s shortbread – and the fabulous cooked breakfasts are served all day. Tea is served in vintage china cups from pots warmed by cosies made from recycled jumpers. The Belgian hot chocolate will transform a cold rainy day.
