Unpretentious homemade food is the promise from Gina and Stuart at The Garden Room, and that’s exactly what you get. Whether you order a healthy breakfast, weighty tuna melt, delicious afternoon tea or gargantuan slice of carrot cake you won’t go hungry. Ingredients are sourced from nearby farms wherever possible, and on Fridays you can sample fish ’n’ chips made with the daily catch at Filey. Everything is cooked to perfection and the staff are welcoming and efficient.
The café is swamped by blooming plants and shrubs (make the most of the lush courtyard on fine days) and housed in a low stone building. Light pours in from country-cottage windows. Walls are decorated with delicate floral patterns and the wood panelling is painted a soft olive green. You’ll find it in a handsome village just south of Doncaster and near Sheffield, so it’s a great place to break a long journey north or south.
