Once a spa destination and centre of the wool trade, Moffat is a handsome market town arranged around a broad high street. Quirkily decorated Brodies is tucked behind the museum to the south of the main square. A much-loved family-run restaurant it’s a tea room by day and a relaxed candlelit restaurant by night.

Russell is the man in the kitchen and his much lauded food is almost one of the town’s tourist attractions. Lunches are light and flavourful; gutsy, slightly posher dishes are on the evening menu. Even if you’re not looking for a full meal, the cakes – baked in-house – and afternoon teas are worth seeking out, while non-drivers might want to sample the enviable selection of gins proudly on show in a beautiful drinks cabinet.

If you’ve got time, head just out of town to the wonderfully named Devil’s Beef Tub, a valley once used by members of the Moffat Clan to hoard cattle stolen in raids.
