Ten acres of open meadowland, big skies, tables of homegrown plants for sale out front and a sturdy wooden playframe make The Country Café at the Lodge a tranquil place to pause from the road.
It’s run by the Lodge Trust, a charity which provides support and training to adults with learning disabilities, some of whom supply the friendly welcome inside. Inside the larch-clad hut is warm and relaxed, lined with shelves selling pots of homemade jam and chutneys alongside wooden handicrafts made here. Food is honest and uses local and Fairtrade suppliers – fry ups and sausage and egg sandwiches for breakfast, omelettes, paninis and Caesar salads for lunch. Grab a table inside or take tea and cake to one of the picnic benches on the grass, washed with bird song.
Car parking is plentiful and – as you’d expect – there’s excellent access for the elderly and less able.
