For delicious, freshly baked goodies, look no further than the Three Hares, run with love by couple James and Nina. Nina is chief baker and her imaginative recipes are influenced by her upbringing in Dusseldorf (expect a range of ryes and sourdoughs), Japanese parents and her time with bakers of the north. Sweet treats might feature red wine and chocolate cake, banana and maple syrup loaf, and overfilled doughnuts.
The tiny shop in charming Sedbergh’s old lanes is also a bustling café, often crowded with people savouring coffee and a book, and a large bay at the back looks out onto the fells.
Nearly all bakeries can be relied on for a good breakfast but here they’re particularly tasty: crumpets, muesli and fresh fruit with good coffee. Tuck into hearty soups and sandwiches at lunch, perhaps rare roast beef and horseradish mayo, smoked mackerel and watercress or cheddar and pear chutney.
