This magnificent house on the edge of the Lake District (the ancient family home of Lord and Lady Inglewood) is a glorious mix of architectural and decorative styles. Once a medieval stronghold to protect the Borders - it still has its pele tower - it has been extended into a grand, crenelated mansion. There's a small entrance fee to tour the house and gardens but it is well worth it: the vast grounds are a fittingly magnificent setting for Hutton with the spectacular Walled Garden the jewel in the crown.
The Cloisters Tea Room is free to enter and is a fabulous medieval affair of arched windows, stone floors, beamed ceilings, coats of arms and dark wood furniture. Delicious homemade light lunches are served when the House is open and daily-baked cakes and scones accompany pots of tea and cafetières of coffee. For Afternoon Tea, book in advance. A huge dresser displays local chinaware, preserves, cards and craft souvenirs.
