This magnificent house on the edge of the Lake District is the ancient family home of Lord and Lady Inglewood and is a glorious mixture of architectural and decorative styles. Once a medieval stronghold
to protect the Borders (it still has its pele tower), it has been extended into a grand, crenelated mansion. You’ll need to pay a small entrance fee to tour the gardens and house but it is well worth it: the extensive grounds are a fittingly magnificent setting for Hutton with the spectacular Walled Garden the jewel in the crown.

The Cloisters Tea Room is free to enter and is a fabulous medieval affair of arched windows, stone floors and walls, beamed ceilings, coats of arms and dark wood furniture. Delicious homemade light lunches are served when the House is open and cakes and scones are baked daily to accompany pots of tea and cafetières of coffee. A huge dresser displays local china ware, preserves, greetings cards and crafts for tasteful souvenirs.
