M6

Walking and cycling routes abound in the Trough of Bowland, a wonderfully named Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Lancashire, and where good tramping lies, good pubs normally follow. Enter the Fleece, built in the 1600s as a farm and now transformed into a lovely local. It has the original exposed beams, stone fireplaces and flagstone floors that you’d expect from a character pub, updated with tartan upholstery, woollen rugs, Laura-Ashley-style blinds and cosy banquette booths. The menu has the same updated-traditional vibe: sausage and mash or vegetable cheese roulade for lunch; and then for dinner, crispy whitebait, seared scallops with crispy pork belly, steak and ale pie and rack of Pilling Marsh lamb with black cherry and rosemary jus.

A pleasant terrace garden features a log cabin for kids. Cementing its place in village life, a small shop to one side of the front door sells groceries (Atkinsons’ coffee, Dolphinholme honey, Pennine Way preserves), local artwork and hand-whittled walking sticks.
