Leyland’s Worden Park is a haven of mature woodlands, meadows and playgrounds. The 18th-century outbuildings and parkland of what was once Worden Hall (destroyed by fire in 1941) have been rescued and the old stables have been recently colonised by the wonderful Folly Coffee House and Deli.
It’s very much a family affair: sisters Lisa and Paula at the helm, Grandad (a farmer) supplies the veg and Mum and Nan bake magazine-worthy cakes. You can take away a picnic basket to enjoy in the glorious grounds, though many prefer the cosy, almost Victorian-style tea room, where breakfasts of avocado and feta on toast or lunches of black pudding ploughman’s are cheerily served.
Dogs are as welcome as people: there’s a dedicated shower in the car park for sluicing off furry friends after muddy walks and the Folly also has a doggy deli selling canine treats. The large public car park is a five-minute stroll and staff can provide a permit for the small, adjacent car park in inclement weather.
