The sprawling Essington Farm has been run by the Simkin family since 1892, selling field-fresh produce year-round (sometimes only hours out of the ground) as well as hosting a pick-your-own field and plant nursery.
Newly renovated, the farm shop and deli is large and stacked with islands of fresh and store-cupboard produce to plunder for a very respectable picnic – award-winning pork pies, fresh juices, slabs of pâté and local honey. The butcher’s counter sells free-range pork and Hereford beef reared in the fields outside the window, priding itself on traditional service with a smile. Pick up some speciality sausages made in-house for a delicious BBQ treat.
Head chef Amanda Kellar also raids those shelves for the delicious restaurant food, whether fresh pies, salads, traybakes, soups or roasts with all the trimmings: straight to the fork without even leaving the farm.
