Low Sizergh is a paragon of happy animals, organic farming, community growing schemes, environmental stewardship and delectable local food. Its café, farm shop and gift gallery are housed in a 17th-century barn, cuddled round a grassy courtyard with outside tables in summer. A farm trail loops around the woodland and fields with fairy doors for little ones to spot, so don those wellies and work up an appetite.
The café menu is inspired by the farm kitchen: vegetable soups, hunks of quiche and farmer’s salads on chunky crockery. Thick milkshakes are a sure-fire hit with children. Gallery windows in the café overlook the parlour where the cows are milked so you can watch while enjoying lunch, buy from the raw milk dispenser to taste the fresh creaminess for yourself.
The farm shop brims with local game, salami, cheeses and regional specialities such as Cumberland sausages and Morecambe Bay shrimp. Freshly-baked cakes are firm customer favourites. You can buy farm-grown organic veg and fruit from the orchard, where bee hives shelter under the apple trees; this is a real-life food and farm adventure.
