Low Sizergh is a paragon of happy animals, organic farming, community growing schemes, environmental stewardship and delectable local food. If only all farms were like this.
A café, farm shop and gift gallery are housed in a 17th-century barn which cuddles round a grassy courtyard where tables are set out in summer. A farm trail loops around the pond, woodland and fields, and includes fairy doors for little ones to spot, so don your wellies and work up an appetite.
The menu in the café is inspired by the farm: vegetable soups, hunks of quiche and farmer’s salads on chunky crockery. Thick milkshakes are a sure-fire hit with children. Gallery windows in the café look down into the milking parlour - where else can you watch cows being milked while enjoying a cream tea?
The farm shop shelves are stacked with delicacies – local game, salami, cheeses and regional specialities such as Cumberland sausages and Morecambe Bay shrimp. Freshly baked cakes and shortbread are firm favourites with customers. And you can buy farm-grown organic veg as well as fruit from the orchard. Do try the raw milk from the dispenser – it’s unpasteurised and tastes fantastically fresh and creamy.
