Greenhouses, it seems, make wonderful cafés. The Applestore fills a beautifully rustic glasshouse – an old vinery. Scarlet rugs thrown over the stone floor, comfortably mismatched tables and turquoise pendant lights have turned it into a gastronomic den with a beautifully landscaped, sunny walled garden. Walk further to a fantastic adventure play area fashioned from fallen trees, stately redwoods and views over to the fells. For a longer leg stretch, the route to Nicky Nook viewpoint is close by; Tipsy the house dog has been known to tag along.

Specials include jacket potatoes with mushrooms in blue cheese, bean and chorizo soup, or a goat’s cheese salad with fig chutney. You can normally expect overfilled barmcakes (rolls) served with coleslaw, salad and crisps, cured meat platters or sausage and mash.

Baking is an art form here and there’s always a healthy selection to choose from: blackbean chocolate brownies, sultana and blueberry scones, strawberry gateaux. Fabulous.
