M6

Sister to glamorous Askham Hall hotel and the Queen's Head pub down the road, this low, white-washed building is a classy country inn with gourmet food to match. It's at the heart of the Lowther Estate and is a hub for the community. The run of intimate, interconnecting rooms have flagstone floors, scrubbed tables and walls hung with period photographs. There’s a sunny courtyard with chunky benches and an enclosed garden where kids and dogs can run free – ask staff for local hiking tips.

Food is foraged, organically home-grown, or sourced locally. Field to fork reigns supreme. The monthly-changing menu may include twice-baked cheese and spring onion soufflé, slow-cooked shorthorn beef or a rich chocolate pot. Mingle with the locals in the cosy bar or sink into a sofa to digest.

The pub re-opens in spring 2023 following a refurb so the above may change. Do check ahead for current opening hours and menu specifics.
