Once the Lonsdale family pile, this former manor house at the edge of the Lake District has been turned into an informally elegant hotel by Charlie Lowther, who grew up here.

Tucked away in a Grade II-listed barn in the beautiful gardens, the Kitchen Garden Café has low-beamed ceilings, cobbled floors and white-washed walls – and a counter filled with home-baked cakes and sausage rolls. The food is unmatched (stews, soups, fell lamb with wild garlic risotto) and the kitchen gardens provide much for the table. The oven outside is fired up on busy days for crispy pizzas, which can be enjoyed on benches in the scented orchard if the sun is shining.

Families will love exploring the animal trails, which take in the hall menagerie – shorthorn cattle, boer goats, ducks, chickens and rare-breed piggies. Signs point the way from the village road to the rear car park dedicated to café customers, and if the cafe is shut when you’re passing, try one of the sister pubs: the Queen’s Head in Askham or George & Dragon, Clifton.
