This grand stately home was almost scrapped for timber in the 1920s. Imagine! Thankfully, the folks at Samlesbury Hall have made a tremendous job of its rescue, restoring the exterior back to its black and white former glory. Witch hunts, priest holes, ghost stories – there’s plenty of history to explore as well as the blooming gardens. Free tours on Sundays are led by gruesome Janey the witch or portly Henry VIII.
Kids will love the galleon-themed playground and the rabbits, goats and Kunekune pigs. The Heritage Café - in a climber-clad former plant centre - serves simple dishes (the onion soup would impress a Frenchman), scones with jam and clotted cream and roasts on a Sunday, all with estate-grown ingredients. At Dottie’s Wafflery, claimed to be England’s first, feast on sweet and savoury waffles (obviously), Lancashire ice cream and milkshakes. For a glamping overnighter, book one of The Hamlet's dog-friendly shepherd’s huts.
