A cosy little hideaway in the arches, Morgans Coffee House is tucked away beneath Kings Weston House, a Grade I-listed mansion and little-known gem at the edge of Bristol. Completed in 1719 it was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh who also sketched Blenheim Palace.

Food is hearty – warming soups, delicious quiches, light bites and fantastic homemade cakes – and the atmosphere cosy. It’s a haven for those travelling with dogs and kids. Original flagstones on the floor and colourfully tiled walls mean that dogs are welcome (on leads) to join their owners by the wood burners, and the house is ringed with acres of woodland and gardens, making for respectable leg stretches.

Don’t miss the Compass Dial at Penpole Point (an ancient shipping marker used to navigate safely into the Avon) and Lodge gatehouse. A lawn overlooks the Severn and Avonmouth’s port and is ideal for games and letting off steam. Parking is free and fairly abundant.
