An 18th-century beer house turned coaching inn, The Swan was refurbished by new owners in 2014 to become a much-loved village pub. Locals throng in the open-plan bar with its crackling fires, cosy corners and flagstone floors. In a sunny lounge with overstuffed chairs and a wood-burner you can kick back and tuck into the cake stand and all-day snack menu. Sundays are dedicated to lazy roasts, newspapers and Bloody Marys.
The menu changes regularly, inspired by chef Tom Blake’s River Cottage training and fresh ingredients from the market – eggs from Burnham-on-Sea, fish from Bridport, meat from the local butcher’s own herd. Loaves of bread are baked here, served with dinner and available to take away too. In summer, chefs make the most of a wood-burning oven and smoker in the lawned garden. Dogs are welcome in the bar area and there are some fabulous walks nearby on the Somerset Levels and around Cheddar Gorge.
