In a Tudor-style building amid the delightful architectural jumble that is Tewkesbury’s high street, Theoc House is a relaxed café-bar to suit the most determined of lounge lizards. A community hub as much as an eatery, it has quizzes, live music, books and board games to encourage lingering on the squat chesterfields and mismatched wooden chairs and tables.
The coffee and on-trend breakfasts will set you up for the day: sourdough with local jam, eggs Benedict or a one-pan wonder incorporating bacon, onion, mushroom, potatoes, eggs and double Gloucester cheese. Lunch includes ciabatta with fries, super-food salads and burgers. Tasty tapas, beetroot and garlic pasta and balsamic rump of lamb star in the evening menu.
When you’re fed and watered, wander around the pretty riverside town and glimpse its 1,000-year history in the abbey and half-timbered houses that bore witness to decisive battles in the War of the Roses. The abbey is exquisitely beautiful.
