One of Somerset's best local food stores, Brockley started life 80 years ago as a roadside stall selling fruit and veg straight from the surrounding fields. Still wedded to the ethos of fresh, delicious and ethical – ‘grown not flown’, as they put it – the store is today frequented as much by locals as curious new visitors.
The smell of baking permeates as the ovens are put hard to work creating Brockley Stores’ praised goodies, with quiches and pies held in high esteem. Feast your eyes – and bellies – on generously filled sandwiches, warm pastries and colourful salads. Fresh coffee from local roastery, Extract, is on sale at the door and frothy cups of the strong stuff can be bought to go from the barista. Fill your basket with tasty bakes, ready meals and still-muddied farm produce, perhaps en route home from Bristol Airport, nearby.
There’s an al fresco picnic area outside for lingering, a grassy area for children and doggies and plenty of gorgeous countryside on the doorstep for a leg-stretch.
