Spin across the Severn’s flood plain to the traditional town of Thornbury with higgledy-piggledy roof lines, cascading floral displays and a castle where Henry VIII once stayed with his queen, Anne Boleyn.
Among the town’s cafés and pubs, Papilio at Heritage is one of our favourites. The shop and café were badly damaged by fire in 2015, but have emerged like a phoenix from the flames under the guidance of owner, Tabi, who you’ll often find cheerily serving customers.
Wander through the beautifully stocked gift shop to a modern, light-drenched café with views onto a grassy garden where children can safely let off steam. Parents can delve into baskets of toys and books to keep little ones entertained, while grown-ups can pause over the newspapers and magazines with a light lunch or afternoon tea. Borrow a blanket to make the most of the fresh air, even on chillier days.
