15-minutes’ drive from the motorway, the Ethicurean is one of our longest detours but it’s worth it. The relaxed restaurant and café is set in the former kitchen garden and tastefully refurbished glasshouse of grand Victorian residence Barley Wood – now separated by the road – with sweeping views towards the fern-mottled Mendips.
Guided by the the natural cycle of the garden, they celebrate the local soil and much of the food on offer is freshly plucked – with a corresponding focus on vegetables – and transformed into an imaginative array of dishes. For those who crave pasture-reared meat and sustainable seafood, there are dishes designed to compliment.
Linger for longer and you can lunch on small plates, or dine on more substantial feasts and renowned Sunday lunches (be sure to book in advance). Informal and friendly, there’s parking on site and kids are safe to trundle around within the walled gardens. A touch pricey, but well worth it.
