A lovely old pub in a village wedged in a valley at the edge of Cardiff, the Kings Arms is a 17th-century local with original features, good food and a relaxed atmosphere.
The low-beamed snug with white-painted stone walls and warm lighting has an open fireplace and plenty of cushioned nooks to tuck yourself into. There’s a stack of help-yourself board games and a jar of complementary dog treats on the bar for furry visitors.
The menu is modern and flavourful. Lunch on homemade mushroom pâté with toasted sourdough, grilled halloumi with grapefruit and mango salsa, or the much-talked-about fish-finger sandwiches. Dinner might be pan-fried salmon with kale and courgettes, or local sausages with carrot and parsnip mash. The Sunday roast is popular, with a great mushroom nut roast for vegetarians.
The garden area is safe enough to let kids loose and has a large lawn, plus sunny patio with unusual deck games to idle some time away.
