A country home tableau – wicker dog basket, newspapers, enormous exotic flower arrangement, milk pail lamp and taxidermy pheasant – greets you as you step through the doors of this countrified, clapboard pub which was once an old sheep drover’s inn.
In the seagrass-painted bar you’ll find open fires and bookshelves, busts, feathers and knick-knacks, and a cosy nook furnished with trunks and leather furniture – ideal for both a competitive game of Scrabble and kicking back with a newspaper. It’s popular with the horse-racing crowd, which you’ll notice in the racing TV coverage often buzzing in the background.
Food is excellent and flavoursome; the restaurant suave and animated. Cheese boards and duck spring rolls are offered as bar snacks; Bloody Mary gazpacho is on the menu for starters; Cornish cod with red pepper coulis and chorizo, and Wiltshire sirloin with garlic butter among the mains. The Pheasant is under new management since this information was compiled.
