Uplifting views, honest cooking and alpacas, the Tollgate makes a refreshing pause from the motorway. The tea room is housed in a former turnpike, a sturdy building of stone, slate and arched windows, and looks to the sublime Welsh hills.
Settle in a corner next to the wood-burner or in the bright, Victorian conservatory for table service breakfasts of porridge, granola or eggs Benedict, and lunches of halloumi and avocado rarebit, cod and prawn fish cakes or falafel burger. Dainty afternoon teas are available to enjoy on the lawn – where you can also have a game of boules – and cakes are home baked, sticky and delicious. There’s a 20% discount for ‘cakeaway’. Tea is all loose leaf (speciality blends from Pukka) and coffee perfectly roasted.
Little people can canter around in the gardens, wolf down organic ice creams from Marshfield Ice Cream down the road, or feed carrots to Honey and Bumble, the resident Shetland ponies.
