Blacker Hall Farm Shop is an Aladdin’s cave of delicious West Yorkshire produce, most of it grown or prepared on the farm and the rest carefully selected from local growers and suppliers who share the same values. The award-winning shop is run by Edward and Cheryl Garthwaite, a hands-on, husband-and-wife team. They pile the shelves high with temptation, from Wakefield rhubarb to Yorkshire ales and Cumbrian charcuterie. Follow your nose to find the in-house bakery making a daily range of cakes, and pies, or pick up some dry-aged beef sirloin, dry-cured bacon and Blacker Hall sausages from the butchery; there’s also a deli, greengrocery, fishmongers, gift house and wine loft. Service is friendly and informative – just ask if you’d like some recipe inspiration.
The Barn Café is at the back and serves proper farmhouse food, from full Yorkshire breakfasts to homemade quiche for lunch and delicious afternoon teas, as well as an extensive drinks menu. Sit up in the airy rafters of the beautiful old barn or grab a table either in the courtyard or on the sun-drenched patio where kids can charge about on the lawn beyond. Dogs are welcome outside.
