Thousands pass Castle Donington on their way to East Midlands airport or to the well-known Donington Park race circuit, but only a handful of people drop into the village itself. They are well rewarded. The charming high street, farmers’ market and Saxon history are well worth a look, even if the castle is long gone.
Refuel for the onward journey at No.11 Deli in the village centre, where Liza and her chipper, friendly team serve nourishing breakfasts (almond croissants, bacon butties, homemade smoothies), tasty sandwiches (hot beef, stilton and red onion chutney, pastrami and sliced gherkin, and cheddar crunch), jacket potatoes and pasta pots alongside an array of salads, pies and cakes. Their famous oinkers, giant sausage rolls, have people queuing down the street.
Scoff your goodies and sip your coffee at the small bar in the window while you decide which deli goods you’re going to sweep into your shopping basket.
