Food miles are so low at the Minskip Farm Shop near Boroughbridge that you can see vegetables growing in the field in front. Chickens scratch around for grubs in the field at the back, supplying golden-yolked eggs to the shop, and you can visit the lambs in spring.
Third-generation pig farmer Ben and his novelist wife Emma took over the farm business in 2017 and have been busy evolving the popular farm shop into a local food hub. They stock a wide range of fresh and store-cupboard products from the local area, 96% of which are sourced less than 30 miles from the door. These goodies include Aga tray bakes and jams from Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves, bread from the village down the road, pork pies from Whixley, pâté and smoked mackerel from Mackenzies Yorkshire Smokehouse. Plunder the selection for a sensational picnic or the makings of a delicious dinner.
Keep an eye out for the café, which is due to open soon and promises good things.
