You’ll wish the Seven Stars was your local. West country ales, cider, gin and award winning food at a reasonable price. Natives chatter at the bar and shoot pool, whilst couples and families fill the dining-room tables. A weekly quiz and even monthly barber haircuts reinforce community links and open-door policy. The interior is quirky-rustic: leather chesterfield next to the log-burner, a table fashioned from an old pub mirror, metro tiles behind the bar and a grandfather clock in the corner. At the back there’s a wonderful secret garden with sheltered wooden booths, deck chairs and AstroTurf lawn.
Food is a couple of notches up from pub grub and the menu changes with the seasons with a focus on local and sustainable produce: expect lamb, mussels and vibrant vegetables in summer; venison, duck, mackerel and root vegetables in winter. Pub favourites – sausage and mash, pie of the moment, cod and chips – are available year round. Pizzas are some of the best (and biggest!) in Exeter and are available all day to eat in or takeaway.
