Incongruously located on a small industrial estate, the Almond Thief has earned a fearsome reputation for its quality baked goods. There’s no cutting corners here, only traditional techniques and the finest ingredients: watch the bakers at work as you sup a cuppa. The café is starkly minimalist and on-trend, with wooden trestle tables and benches, vintage chairs, polished concrete floors and holly boughs decorating the walls. There’s a small play corner for kids.
The menu is small, made from scratch and perfectly formed. Bread features prominently, naturally: perhaps Bob’s biodynamic poached eggs on toast served with home-smoked salmon, house granola with raspberry compote and yoghurt, leek and goat’s cheese frittata, or red lentil, lemon and ginger soup. Coffee is great and accompanied by princely Semla buns, flakey almond slices and caramelised egg custard tarts.
Don’t, whatever you do, forget to pick up a loaf on your way out.
