Teffont Evias is a gorgeous Wiltshire backwater where the pace is unhurried, the river burbles and even the bus stops are thatched. It’s in the gorgeous Nadder Valley so you can stride out into the fields before retreating to Howard’s House, a serene country hotel open all day for restorative coffees and drinks, as well as for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Chef Andy Britton cut his teeth with Albert Roux and his grade-A experience really shines through in the flawless dishes, as do the flavours cultivated in the veggie patch at the top of the garden.
The terrace is a canopied oasis surrounded by beautiful borders and a croquet lawn to the front. It’s a beautiful spot for a long, cold drink in summer, serenaded by birds. You can also enjoy a tiered afternoon tea here or in the cosy sitting room inside, where the fire is stoked up on cooler days (pre-booking essential). It’s a posher stop but a very worth-while one.
