A large blackboard outside advertising film nights and game supper evenings underscores the community feel of this friendly country pub. It’s lively and welcoming, with a comfortable, eclectic style, from the boater-wearing bison head to faded rugs flung over flagstones and deep sofas. Muddy paws and sticky fingers are welcome, and rooms are fab should you want to stop the night. The rear courtyard looks over the fields, a good place to soak up the rays or start a walk.
Order a homemade pork pie in the bar and mix with pint-drinking regulars reading leisurely papers and friendly locals catching up on the gossip. Step through to the dining room for delicious, uncomplicated meals – seared wild sea trout, rosary ash goat cheese and roast peach salad, treacle-cured salmon and pineapple salsa or lamb and anchovy butter. Food provenance is ‘measured in metres, not miles’; some ingredients come from the pub’s own smallholding, some bartered with neighbours in exchange for meals.
