A303

You can do your weekly grocery round in Udder Farm Shop, which has a deli, fishmonger, gift, booze and freezer sections (farm produce, rather than crispy pancakes) and butchery – and that’s the point. Farmers Jane and Brian Down opened their vast, modern shop to offer a low-mileage alternative to supermarkets and support British agriculture. Eyes peeled for special treats such as gooseberry vinegar and Cerne Abbas giant shortbread.

Breakfasts are farm-filling (full English, porridge with honey, poached egg on muffins); lunchtime cottage pies and burgers are generous and made with meat reared in the fields over yonder. Home-baked cakes, fluffy meringues and scones will tide you over the afternoon munchies. Children will be absorbed by the outdoor play park where parents can supervise from the patio while admiring views across Blackmore Vale. If you’re in a rush you can grab hot drinks, pasties, frittata and slices of quiche to go from the deli.
