Monks Yard has settled very comfortably into its peaceful new premises in the grounds of historic Horton Manor, near both the A303 and the A358. The gardens packed with unusual trees, high-ceilinged industrial chic and first-rate food make it a delightful place to be.
Service is unswervingly friendly and the imaginative café counter is loaded with tempting cakes: apricot and cranberry sponge, perhaps, or coffee and amaretto. Ingredients, sourced from the community garden and the wider Somerset region, are transformed into simple but tasty sandwiches, soups and panini. Breakfasts are memorable and specials change frequently. Organic, fair-trade coffee is roasted nearby, and teas are loose-leaf.
The Monks Yard shop, Nest & Nettle, sells an attractive collection of homeware and 'lifestyle' gift items – jewellery, candles, plants and ceramics – and knitters will love its Lace Knittery yarn shop.
