Monks Yard has settled into its swanky new premises very well. Converted cow shed has been swapped for high-ceilinged industrial chic; courtyard for generous gardens – which you’re welcome to explore – and ample parking.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the unswervingly friendly service, nor the counter loaded with imaginative cakes – apricot and cranberry sponge, perhaps, or coffee amaretto. Ingredients are sourced from the community garden and around Somerset, and transformed into simple but tasty sandwiches, soups and paninis. Breakfasts are brilliant and specials change frequently. Organic, fair-trade coffee is roasted nearby and teas are loose leaf.

Their shop, Nest & Nettle, sells an eminently browseable collection of homeware and lifestyle objets – jewellery, candles, plants and ceramics – so look no further if you need to pick up some gifts.

It’s literally metres from the fast food joints and a million miles better.
