Fabulous gardens radiate out from the Tudor manor house like sunbeams, melting at the fringe into a deer park and lush, green fields. The gardens are laid out in ‘rooms’ where you can idly wander, taking in the brick-pathed pergolas, wiggly-spined stables, dragonfly-laden moat, rose garden, extensive orchards and walled kitchen garden, which still supplies the café. The enormous plot of champagne rhubarb, for example, is put to good use in season for lip-smacking crumbles, and rhubarb and almond cakes.
Stop for tea or lunch in the Strode tea rooms in the main house – where you can munch delicious homemade food in a panelled room with views over the countryside – or in the somewhat grander dining room, which overlooks the lawns and pond through arched, leaded doors. Dogs are welcome in certain parts of the garden (a map tells you which). Fresh water bowls and dog treats are available at reception, where you’ll also find a second-hand book barn, fabulous gift shop and ice cream shop.
