This long, slate-roofed former stable is now a bright farm shop and deli, designed and newly refurbished by local furniture maker, Matthew Burt. Shelves are heavy with goodies and groceries, from local fudge and Mrs Mack’s dressings to fresh pasta and preserves.
The deli peddles Wiltshire ham, smoked fish, antipasti and superlative homemade quiches and pithiviers. English cheeses abound: Godminster, Pitchfork Cheddar, Baron Bigod brie. If on the hop, order a coffee and fill your deli pot with olives, artichokes and rich pesto or sample the homecooked beef or salami. The beetroot, feta and za’atar galette is something else.
There's covered seating outside so you can perch to enjoy celebrated sausage rolls, panini, sausage and bacon sarnies or a homemade chocolate Guinness cake. Treats can be wrapped to go. With a cosy café-restaurant and Scandi-styled B&B down the road at Fonthill, Bird & Carter might just be your favourite one-stop Salisbury shop.
