A303

The old stone walls and wooden beams welcome you to the Flintlock Inn, where log-burners and low-beamed ceilings combine with a smiley welcome from owners Hassen, Harriet, Ann and their team. The well-tended gardens draw the crowds on fine days to this family and dog-friendly spot. It's in the hamlet of Marsh, which hugs the A303 tightly, so it’s a mere twist of the wheel to land at this characterful country pub. The Blackdown Hills are around you.

No corners are cut when it comes to flavour, with thoughtful vegan and veggie options on the seasonal menu. The homemade puddings are imaginative and excellent. Portions are substantial, bread is oven-fresh and lunchtimes could be for lighter bites or a Flintlock traditional pie; the steak and kidney pie is special. It's a comfortable place to linger, or for a quick coffee on your route. Stretch your legs with a walk to the river Yarty or stay put; there's a vast, west-facing beer garden waiting to relieve car cramps and absorb children’s energies.
