A handsome, 16th-century country pub at the edge of Somerton’s octagonal market square, The White Hart is breezy yet cosy with whitewashed walls, stripped floorboards and patchwork tiles, log burners and antler chandeliers. A courtyard garden bursting with olive trees and lavender bushes stands beyond the conservatory dining room.

Broad skylights and sash windows fill the bar with light and in the evening locals often gather for a pint. Shadowy nooks with low-slung lights and chinks of stained glass provide enticing havens for kicking back and unwinding with a paper.

The menu, devised by ex-River Cottage chef Tom Blake, shows seasonal West Country cooking in its best light. Lunch and dinner includes delights such as falafel with baba ganoush, slow-cooked Creedy duck leg, grilled Cornish mackerel and wood-fired pizza. People rave about the breakfasts.
