A30

One of the new wave of services, Hog & Hedge is a breath of fresh air. Swing off the A30 on your way to or from Cornwall, and you’ll be restored by freshly cooked food and excellent speciality coffee, with views of Dartmoor and the Devonshire fields. Trestle tables stand in the middle of the dining room, heaving with help-yourself cakes and goodies. Traditional rugs are slung over polished concrete floors and scattered with stylishly mismatched tables; there are posh toiletries in the loos and charging points for mobiles and tablets.

Prices are reasonable and food includes full English breakfast, bacon sandwiches, porridge, soups, toasties and ploughman’s, all made with the best West Country ingredients. Nothing is fried, so don’t expect chips, but everything is delicious.

Children will love the play area with a Wendy house and toys, and there’s a dedicated food station for little people, with plastic cups and plates, colouring sheets, a microwave and bottle warmer.
