You’d be forgiven for looking for Hansel and Gretel as you arrive at this cottage café deep in 650 acres of Cardinham Woods. It’s a cutesy stone cottage with open fire in winter and parasoled picnic benches in summer. Food and drinks are served on vintage crockery and floral curtains frame the windows.
It’s a foodie’s delight. Organic and locally sourced ingredients are rustled up into inventive dishes, such as homemade granola and compote, garlic mushroom and brie sandwiches, leek fritters with a herby yoghurt dip, sausage sandwiches with homemade onion marmalade and lip-smacking sausage rolls. Cakes and scones are baked every day by Lara (carrot with orange cream cheese icing and lemon berry drizzle are the most popular) are served with dollops of clotted cream and a steaming cup of locally roasted Origin coffee or Cornish Tregothnan tea.
There are special carved posts for dog leads and the woodland trails are perfect for leg stretching once little people have exhausted the adventure play area.
