A12

A 15th-century coaching inn in the quintessentially English village of Dedham, the Sun Inn has an oak-panelled bar and lounge that boast big fires and plenty of comfy sofas and armchairs. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed drink or lunch with views of grand St Mary’s church and the airy dining room looks out on to the terrace and a large garden.

Both the service and menu are relaxed and unpretentious. Friendly staff serve food featuring local produce with a Mediterranean twist, which benefits the pub’s proximity to the coast. Try grilled mackerel, octopus and chickpea salad, or black pork belly with clams, samphire and butterbeans.

The Sun Inn is deep in Constable country; the artist went to school here and Flatford Mill is close by. You can borrow bikes from the pub or take a boat trip down the unspoiled River Stour. With so much to do locally, you may just have to stay a night at the inn.
