The Station Buffet in the restored Victorian waiting rooms serves hearty, strongly flavoured and generously portioned lunches: quiches, Northumbrian rarebit, bangers and mash. This is comfort food at its very best. Watch out for the sinfully rich macaroni cheese topped with bacon bits. After a bowl of Barter Books’ signature dish by the open fire, you will be forced to abandon your onward journey. Edinburgh by the evening? No chance, my friend.
Breakfasts and the 100+ cakes baked daily on site are equally likely to raise your cholesterol – French toast with syrup, bacon with everything (more or less), egg and chips... You could be good and opt for one of the ‘Super Healthy Options’, which include avocado toast and porridge.
