There’s always a warm welcome at Tapps, a garden centre in a long barn that overlooks a bright patchwork of allotments and the North Hertfordshire countryside beyond. Tea at Tapps is its rustic café with floor-to-ceiling windows, decorated with greenery and local artwork.
Teas are loose leaf, coffee is strong and the atmosphere is relaxed. Kitchen maestro and owner, Louise, prides herself on wholesome, homemade food. She conjures up lip-smacking cakes from the oven fresh every day: warm scones slathered with clotted cream and jam, passion fruit and white chocolate loaf, a treat-packed vegan and GF Rocky Road, macaroons and orange and poppy seed cake.
Lunches are hardy and filling: quiches from the oven, perfect jacket potatoes, stuffed sandwiches and Gardener’s lunches. Parking is plentiful, and muddy walkers (with muddy boots!) are welcome. Walk it off or work up your appetite first on the footpaths that cross-cross the nearby fields.
